1972 年生まれ 米国リオ・グランデ大学芸術学部アート専攻 中退
幼少期から絵を描くことを愛し、芸術を志す。
全ての芸術が建築に集約される、とする「バウハウス」の思想に感銘を受け、建築デザイナーとしてキャリアをスタートさせ、無数の店舗・住宅設計をこなす。とりわけミッドセンチュリー（1940 年代～1960 年代の建築・家具・アート）に造詣が深く、建築、インテリアや家具、照明、音楽やファッションに至るまでその知識は多岐にわたる。
建築に興味が深まるほど、その内装に飾るアートの重要性に気づき、現代の建築に見合う現代アートが少ないことも鑑み、2008 年よりかねてからの念願であった現代アート制作に専念、作品を発表する。

作品の特徴
無駄を極力排除した（マイナスの美）作風であり、自身の深層心理や宇宙、森羅万象をテーマとする。とりわけ日本のアートであること、日本人の心を含む作品であることに固執している。茶の湯の精神にも深い影響を受けているが、例えば、茶室に続く露地にあえて人の手で落ち葉を散らすなどの自然の流れを乱さないような日本人の自然との関わり方への美意識に敬意を持ち、自身の描く直線、真円ではフリーハンドで描くことにこだわりを持っている。サイズの大きな作品において、キャンバスを繋いでいく作風は、豊臣秀吉が茶室を折りたたんで持ち運びを可能にした例にあるように、折りたたみ（着物のたたみ、折り紙、ちゃぶ台など）や、つなぎ合わせる（日本家屋の建築など）日本文化の継承を意識している。

From an early age, Abe developed a deep passion for drawing and aspired to pursue a career in art. Inspired by the philosophy of the Bauhaus, which holds that all artistic disciplines ultimately converge in architecture, he began his professional career as an architectural designer, completing numerous projects including retail spaces and private residences.
He has a particular affinity for mid-century design (architecture, furniture, and art from the 1940s to 1960s), and possesses extensive knowledge across architecture, interior design, furniture, lighting, music, and fashion.
As his engagement with architecture deepened, he became increasingly aware of the essential role of art within spatial environments. Observing the scarcity of contemporary art suited to modern architecture, he began dedicating himself fully to the creation of contemporary artworks in 2008, a long-held aspiration.

Artistic Characteristics
Abe’s work is characterized by a refined aesthetic that eliminates excess to the greatest extent possible, embodying a “subtractive beauty.” His themes engage with the depths of the human psyche, the cosmos, and the totality of existence.
He places particular importance on creating art rooted in Japanese identity and sensibility. Deeply influenced by the spirit of the tea ceremony, he resonates with the Japanese aesthetic of harmonizing with nature—for example, the deliberate scattering of fallen leaves in a tea garden to preserve a sense of natural flow.
This philosophy is reflected in his practice: even straight lines and perfect circles are drawn freehand, embracing subtle irregularities as expressions of vitality.
In larger-scale works, he connects multiple canvases, a method that echoes traditional Japanese cultural practices such as folding (kimono, origami, low tables) and modular construction (as seen in traditional architecture). This approach also recalls the portable tea room associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, embodying a uniquely Japanese sensibility of adaptability and continuity.

私はこれまで、日本の伝統芸能、とりわけ能楽の身体表現を研究してきました。そこでは、個人の感情を前面に表すのではなく、「型」を通すことで、世界の摂理や人知を超えた存在を表現するという独自の思想が息づいています。
TAKAO ABEの作品に触れたとき、私はその表現に大変驚きました。自己表現の要素を削ぐことで大宇宙を立ち現れさせるその手法は、能楽の「型」と深く通じるものだったからです。実際にTAKAO ABEは、「降りてきたイメージを忠実に描く」と語り、自己を前面に出すのではなく、それを削ぎ落とすことを大切にして制作していると言います。
あるがままの宇宙の摂理を静かに表現するその作品からは、日常の中では得がたい視座がもたらされます。それは、私自身が伝統芸能の研究を通して追い求めてきたものとも重なります。
私たちは日常の中で、知らず知らずのうちに多くのこだわりにとらわれています。しかし、現実から少し離れた視座を得たとき、世界の見え方がふと変わる瞬間がもたらされることがあるのではないでしょうか。
実際にTAKAO ABEの作品に触れたことで、私自身の世界観も大きく変容しました。
その魅力に深く心を動かされた私は、より多くの方にこの作品を届けたいという思いからTAKAO ABE先生にお許しを頂き「TAKAO ABE × YUI M. Cultural Project」を立ち上げました。
本サイトでは、作品紹介をはじめ、作品に関連したグッズの展開、さらには日本文化講座のご案内などを発信してまいります。

My research has focused on Japanese traditional performing arts, particularly the embodied expression of Noh.
In this tradition, rather than foregrounding personal emotion, there exists a distinctive aesthetic in which “form (kata)” gives shape to universal principles and presences beyond human understanding.
When I encountered the works of TAKAO ABE, I was deeply struck by their approach.By minimizing elements of personal expression, his works bring forth a vast, cosmic perspective, an approach that resonates strongly with the concept of form in Noh. In fact, ABE has stated that he faithfully renders images that “descend” to him, consciously setting aside personal expression in the process of creation.
His works quietly express the natural order of the universe, offering a perspective that is rarely accessible in everyday life. This perspective closely aligns with what I have long sought through my study of traditional performing arts.
In our daily lives, we often become bound by various attachments and assumptions. Yet when we gain a viewpoint that steps outside of our immediate reality, our perception of the world can shift in profound ways.
Through encountering TAKAO ABE’s work, my own worldview has transformed.
Moved deeply by this experience, I founded the TAKAO ABE × YUI M. Cultural Project in order to share these works with a wider audience.
